Pharming: A Form of Large-Scale Cyberattack

In 2007, 50 financial companies across the US, Europe, and Asia were simultaneously targeted in a three-day cyberattack. During the attack, Trojans were successfully installed on the victims' computers, enabling the extraction of sensitive customer data from the affected companies.

In 2019, the "Voluntarios por Venezuela" movement became the target of another large-scale cyberattack. A week after the Venezuelan president called for citizens to join the movement by registering on the official website, a fake website was created with the same IP address. From that point on, every visit to either the official or fake website resulted in the theft of the registrant's
personal data.

These cyberattacks were executed using a technique known as pharming. In pharming, attackers create fake websites and redirect traffic from legitimate sites to these fraudulent pages in order to steal sensitive data.

The online encyclopedia Wikipedia offers more detailed information about this type of cyberattack in an article created as part of the "WikiHay" campaign by the "Internet Society" NGO.
