From Estate to Online Space: The Origins of the Word “Domain”

The creators of the Domain Name System (DNS) chose a Latin-based name for it.

In the feudal era, the term “dominium” in Latin referred to an estate. Over time, the word “domain”, derived from “dominium”, found its place on the Internet and became part of global language. For decades, it has been used not only as “domain” but also in terms like “domain name”.

In general, the word “domain” conveys the concept of ownership or control over a specific area or location, whether in the physical world or online. Today, each domain represents a distinct and controlled private space on the Internet.

The world’s first domain, symbolics.com, was registered in March 1985 by the American technology company Symbolics Inc. In Armenia, the first domain name registration application was submitted by the Yerevan Institute of Physics, leading to the registration of yerphi.am in December 1994, the same year the country code .am was established.
