In August 1994, exactly 32 years ago, Armenia’s country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), .am, was established. In December of the same year, the first .am domain, yerphi.am, belonging to the Yerevan Physics Institute, was registered. At the time, the internet in Armenia was still primarily used by academic and professional communities, and only 10 domain names had been registered during the first six months.
Over the past three decades, the .am domain has become an integral part of Armenia’s digital identity and presence. In 2015, the number of registered .am domains surpassed 25000, reaching 35000 just one year later. In 2025 registrations exceeded the 45000 mark.
On August 14, 2026, the .am domain reached a historic milestone, with the number of registered domains surpassing 50000. Within just a few days, the total exceeded 50,200. This represents an increase of approximately 3500 registrations between January and August 2026.
More than 62% of all .am domains are registered in Armenia. At the same time, the .am domain has a growing international presence, with registrations from the United States, China, Russia, Germany, and other European countries.
The development of .am goes beyond the growth in registrations. Armenia’s domain zone also supports DNSSEC, helping strengthen the security and reliability of the domain name system. As of May 2026, the .am registry ecosystem included 79 accredited registrars, including the registrar in Armenia and resellers operating in various countries around the world.
Another important milestone in the development of Armenia’s domain space was the introduction of the Armenian-script .հայ domain. The initiative began in 2014, and the domain was launched on May 5, 2016. It enables users to create website domain names and email addresses using Armenian characters, supporting the visibility and continued presence of the Armenian language on the multilingual internet.
Today, .am is not only an important element of Armenia’s digital identity but also a domain used in the international domain name market. Its development began with the professional and personal efforts of a group of dedicated individuals following the INET93 conference. From the outset, the Armenian domain space has been developed and managed by the Armenian organization Internet Society NGO.
