Creation and Development of the Internet: Introducing Domain Name System

In the early 1980s, the Internet was still small and specialized, primarily used for scientific and military purposes. Each device connected to it was identified by an IP address, just like today. However, back then, IP addresses were simply a series of numbers and characters, such as 192.168.1.1. These addresses were difficult to remember, and establishing network connections using them was challenging.

The Domain Name System (DNS) created in 1983 solved this problem by converting IP addresses into easily recognizable words and letter combinations. The first domains were registered in 1985. DNS was not only a technological solution but also a tool for building a global Internet “society” that would connect countless websites, services, and resources.

You can learn more about this system in the free encyclopedia “Wikipedia”, where the number of articles related to the IT sector increased by 100 during the “WikiHay2024” campaign organized by the “Internet Society” NGO.
