The “European Dialogue on Internet Governance” (EuroDIG) conference took place this year in Strasbourg from May 12 to 14, organized at the initiative of the Council of Europe and the Luxembourg Presidency.
EuroDIG 2025 was held under the theme “Safeguarding Human Rights by Balancing Regulation and Innovation,” bringing together 800 representatives from various countries and organizations.
Armenia was represented at the conference by members of the Internet Governance Council Interdepartmental Group, David Alaverdyan and Samvel Martirosyan.
The discussions among more than 800 participants focused on key issues related to the protection of human rights in the context of digital innovation, including:
- Risks posed by AI systems from a human rights perspective
- Data privacy violations in the use of neurotechnologies
- Limits of restrictions on freedom of expression and concerns over social media surveillance
- Need for age verification systems to safeguard children
- Cybersecurity requirements in light of new EU legislation
EuroDIG 2025 emphasized – technological progress must go hand in hand with the protection of human rights and should be integrated into a comprehensive model that balances innovation and safeguards.
Outcomes of EuroDIG 2025 will directly contribute to the processes of the UN Global Digital Compact and the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20), both of which aim to uphold and advance a multi-stakeholder, inclusive model of Internet governance and promote the use of technology to protect human rights.
The main conference held from May 9 to 11 was preceded by the YOUthDIG youth forum, which encourages young people’s participation in political decision-making and supports their active role in shaping the digital future.
