Internet Security and DNS Development Discussed at ICANN87

The 87th Annual General Meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN87) took place in Bali, Indonesia, from October 17 to 22, bringing together representatives of governments, the technical community, the business sector and civil society from more than 150 countries.

Throughout more than 100 working sessions, participants discussed key issues related to internet security and stability, the development of the Domain Name System (DNS) and international cooperation.

Armenia was represented at ICANN87 by Kristina Hakobyan, Vice Chair of the Board of the Internet Society NGO, which operates the .am and .հայ country-code top-level domain registries.

“Active participation in global internet governance events provides an excellent opportunity to stay informed about developments in the field and to contribute to global processes,” said Kristina Hakobyan.

Key topics on the ICANN87 agenda included preventing DNS abuse, developing policies for the processing and retention of domain name registration data, implementing the New Generic Top-Level Domains (New gTLD) Program and strengthening the governance of the internet’s unique identifier systems.

ICANN President and CEO Kurtis Lindqvist emphasized the importance of strengthening the link between strategic priorities, funding, and implementation. He noted that the solutions developed must be translated into effective action.

ICANN87 once again underscored the importance of the multistakeholder model of internet governance, which enables representatives from different sectors to participate in shaping and coordinating decisions concerning the internet’s development. Participants highlighted the model’s essential role in maintaining the security and stability of the global internet

and ensuring interoperability across its various systems.
