On the occasion of the birth of the national .հայ domain, the “Internet Society” NGO, as part of the Universal Acceptance movement, initiated an awareness event for representatives of the technical community today, May 7th.
The aim was to present the steps being taken at both the global and local levels within the framework of the Universal Acceptance movement. It has been 8 years since the .հայ domain has been operational. Since last year, experts from the Internet Society NGO have enabled the trial run of fully Armenian e-mail addresses. “անուն@էլփոստ.հայ” and “անուն@իհ.հայ” e-mails are available.
The domains created in the last two years are significantly safer and more secure. However, other systems do not yet generate Armenian passwords.
“Recently, the number of systems accepting addresses in national languages, including domains and e-mails, has significantly expanded,” stated Aram Verdyan, a Board member of the Internet Society NGO and head of the Technical team. “Our organization has dedicated significant efforts to expand the .հայ domain and enhance the overall Armenian presence on the Internet.
Additionally, we engage in active collaboration with influential entities in the field, such as ICANN,” rremarked Igor Mkrtumyan, the Board Chair of the Internet Society NGO. As a crucial element of Universal Acceptance, attention was given to the generation of Armenian open data.
“The quantity of open data available in Armenian could play a pivotal role in preserving the Armenian language. This data serves as the foundation for our utilization of artificial intelligence tools. However, to attain the desired outcome, the Armenian database remains relatively limited,” stated Mher Yerznkanyan, a machine learning specialist at Buymie LTD, while introducing the most appropriate tools for enriching the database with voice data.
Addressing strategies for achieving success in Universal Acceptance, Kristina Hakobyan, the Vice-Chair of the Board at the Internet Society NGO, emphasized their efforts to collaborate with the Government to broaden the utilization of the .հայ domain. Armenia, represented by the “Internet Society” NGO, .am Registry, has become a member of the “Universal Acceptance” global movement and was the pioneer in hosting the UA regional conference in 2023.
The movement was initiated by ICANN in collaboration with industry leaders such as Google, Apple, and other companies. Its aim is to render non-Latin domains and e-mails universally acceptable and functional across all devices, applications, and systems worldwide. Additionally, it seeks to expand the Internet community by ensuring universal Internet access.
