The primary goal of the Universal Acceptance (UA) global movement – an important initiative aimed at making the Internet more multilingual – is to ensure that internationalized domain names (IDNs), especially those using non-Latin scripts, are fully recognized and supported across all digital systems. This would enable domains such as .հայ to function seamlessly across websites, applications, and email platforms.
Currently the Universal Acceptance movement is supported by approximately 85% of the world’s country code top-level domains (ccTLDs). The regional adoption rates are as follows:
- Europe: 88%
- Asia: 87%
- USA: 68%
Armenia was among the first countries to join the Universal Acceptance (UA) movement, represented by the Internet Society NGO. This organization, which administers the country’s top-level domain .am, has also been managing the Armenian-script domain .հայ for the past nine years. Thanks to the efforts of its technical team, it is now possible to create and use fully Armenian-script email addresses, such as անուն@ինտերնետհանրություն.հայ:
“By supporting the success of the UA movement, the Internet Society aims not only to ensure Armenia’s active participation in technological advancement, but also to help preserve the Armenian language and promote Armenian culture on the Internet,” says Kristina Hakobyan, the organization’s Board Vice Chair.
