The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), emphasizing the importance of supporting diverse languages and writing systems on the Internet, is undertaking comprehensive efforts to expand the number and geographic reach of internationalized domain names (IDNs). As a result of this work, IDNs now encompass 37 languages and 23 writing systems.
These include:
- Languages: Armenian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Russian, Greek, Persian, Turkish, and others.
- Writing Systems: Armenian, Arabic, Bengali, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Georgian, Greek, Latin, Chinese characters, Japanese Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana, and more.
According to ICANN’s annual report, the Chinese and Arabic script systems lead in the number of internationalized domain names (IDNs), with 59 and 32 IDNs respectively. In contrast, there is only one Armenian-script IDN – .հայ – which marked its 9th anniversary this year with a celebratory flash mob.
