“Internet Society Armenia Chapter” PO has officially launched a new initiative titled “Digital Transformations of Libraries: Building Community Internet Centers”, aimed at enhancing the digital infrastructure and services of 15 libraries across Armenia’s Syunik region. The program will be implemented over the course of one year.
The project started in Goris with a dedicated training session for librarians, which brought together over 35 participants from libraries in Sisian, Goris, Kapan, Meghri, and surrounding communities.
During the event, Tigran Zargaryan, Scientific Director of the Fundamental Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia and the program coordinator, presented an overview of the challenges and opportunities associated with library digitization. Drawing on international best practices, he emphasized that the future development of Armenian libraries must go beyond technical upgrades to also prioritize digital literacy and education.
“Libraries serve as educational and cultural hubs for their communities,” Zargaryan noted. “Digitization enhances this role by expanding access to knowledge and strengthening community engagement.”
Igor Mkrtumyan, President of the “Internet Society Armenia Chapter,” PO also underscored the vital role of staff preparedness and digital competence in the modernization of libraries.
