The .am country code top-level domain (ccTLD), representing Armenia’s unique identity on the Internet, continues to expand its footprint in the global domain market. Today, more than 46,000 .am domains are registered worldwide, with about 62% of them originating from Armenia itself.
Beyond national borders, the United States leads with 8,841 registrations, followed by China (1,708) and Russia (1,119). In Europe, Germany tops the list with 539 .am domains, reflecting growing international interest in Armenia’s digital space.
These insights were shared by Katarina Gevorgyan, External Relations Manager of the Internet Society NGO—the managing organization of the .am domain—during the 84th ICANN Annual General Meeting, recently held in Dublin.
“The .am domain is more than just a technical code; it’s a symbol of Armenia’s digital identity and global connections,” noted Gevorgyan, highlighting the continued growth and international recognition of Armenia’s Internet presence.
She noted that, now in its 31st year of operation, the .am domain has become an attractive platform for the creative and technological sectors.
Over the years, .am has evolved beyond its role as Armenia’s Internet code to become a versatile branding tool recognized worldwide. Thanks to its multi-meaning potential, it resonates across diverse industries — from Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AM) and Additive Manufacturing (AM) to Asset Management (AM), Augmented Marketing (AM), and even Armenian Made (AM).
This associative power has made .am a distinctive and memorable choice in the global digital landscape, uniting Armenia’s national identity with international innovation and creativity.
According to this principle, numerous creative and globally recognized domain names have already been developed — such as instagr.am, telegr.am, progr.am, and will.i.am — showcasing the flexibility and branding potential of the .am extension.
“The .am domain through the accredited registrars has also been integrated with blockchain technologies, enabling its connection to Web3 platforms without altering the traditional DNS system,” explained Katarina Gevorgyan, External Relations Manager of the Internet Society NGO. “This integration opens up new possibilities for NFTs, digital wallets, and innovative brand solutions.”
She also informed participants of the ICANN84 – one of the key global events focused on domain name management and expansion – that 78 accredited registrars in Armenia, along with their international resellers, facilitate the registration of new .am domains. The registration process is open to individuals and legal entities from any country, reflecting the truly global accessibility of Armenia’s Internet domain.
