Internet Society NGO Assembly

The General Assembly of Internet Society NGO was held on February 15, 2019 at the Tekeyan Center. Igor Mkrtumyan and Arman Nersisyan presented the organization's 2016-2018 activity and property use reports, which were approved by the General Assembly. Thereafter, the 1/3 of the organization members came up with an initiative to convene a Special Assembly on February 28 to discuss the issue of making changes and additions to the Charter of the organization.

A press conference for the Day of writing with Armenian script on the Internet

A press conference was held in the Noyan Tapan press hall on the Day of writing with Armenian script on the Internet. Grigori Saghyan, Vice President and Lianna Galstyan, External Relations Manager of “Internet Society” NGO talked about the current state of the use of the Armenian script on the Internet, National IDN’s on the Internet, obstacles, issues and solutions, using Armenian domain name spreading as a way of promoting writing with Armenian letters on the Internet. Speaking of the ".հայ" domain name, G. Saghyan noticed that there is a technical problem related to the dot symbol (.), which is not recognized the by the root servers of the international ICANN organization. Lianna Galstyan spoke about current programs and collaborations with the Language Committee and other government agencies. “Internet Society” NGO cooperates with the Language Committee since July 2018, as a result of which all state agencies and educational institutions get a free ".հայ" domain name.

On June 15-16, 2018, Internet Society NGO and Internet Technologies Center LLC launched a two-day meeting with registrars taking place in Multi Rest House in Tsakhkadzor city. Representatives of all Armenian registrar companies, as well as participants from RA Police and NSS, took part in the inaugural meeting. The outdoor meeting format became an important innovative platform to better get to know each other and to discuss issues concerning the community. The meeting started with a welcome speech by Arman Nersisyan, Director of Internet Society NGO, noting that the key objective of the meeting should be the defining and adoption of the correct and clear ways of dealing with emerging issues. Among the speakers were Anna Karakhanyan, David Karapetyan, Alexandra Kulikova (ICANN, remotely), Hrachya Hakobyan, Yuri Kargapolov (Ukraine) and Aram Orbelyan. Topics covered include web security in Armenia, ICANN and WHOIS, domain name registration policy, Ukrainian experience of domain name disputes, arbitration rules for domain name dispute resolution. The discussions were summed up with confidence to hold such meetings regularly enabling to seek joint solutions to raised issue in a more relaxed and trustworthy atmosphere. To sum up, we look forward to effective work with all registrars and we intend to further deepen cooperation and engagement within the community.

Meeting with the Deputy Minister

On May 29 the First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Information Technologies of the Republic of Armenia Hakob Arshakyan had a meeting with the representatives of «Internet Society" NGO, "Armenian Union of Operators" IAM and "Association of Cable Television Broadcasters of Armenia". The participants congratulated the newly appointed Deputy Minister on assuming office. During the meeting participants discussed current issues of the sphere and possible ways of promoting beneficial processes. The meeting was summed up with an active and constructive discussions of the issues raised by the participants and with the expectations of future regular meetings.

On May 5, Sarkis Knyazyan, a licensed patent lawyer and a licensed litigator specialized in intellectual property law, founder of Knyazyan & Partners Law Office, delivered a lecture on intellectual property and trademarks at the Armenian School on Internet Governance. He presented to students the details of the field, how intellectual property is protected and what can be done if they are breached.

Girls in ICT

This year, Internet Society NGO for the first time has organized an event dedicated to "Girls in ICT" Day. The objective of the event was to create an environment where the participation and achievements of girls and women in ICT are encouraged. The event was organized in a "Round Table" format, with face-to-face and remote participation of experienced and successful women and young girls using information technologies. Participants with diverse professional skills talked about their activities as well as about how IT helps them achieve success in their work. At the end of the event, the participants highly appreciated the importance of such meetings and expressed their desire to make it regular, promoting the atmosphere of cooperation.

ArmSIG | Cybersecurity in Russia and IG Ecosystem

He presented the situation of cyber security in Russia and made comparisons with that of in Armenia. Elena Dodonova, the representative from the Council of Europe, delivered a speech on human rights at the Armenian School on Internet Governance. She presented in detail the approaches and guidelines of the Council of Europe on human rights online and offline. The participants had the opportunity to direct their concerns and inquiries to the lecturer through questions and answers.
